Complianz - Marketing (or other) categories not showing on the cookie banner when using GTM

If you use Google Tag Manager (GTM) with Complianz consent-based triggers (such as cmplz_event_marketing, cmplz_event_statistics, or cmplz_event_preferences), you may notice that some categories disappear from your cookie banner. This happens because your GTM tags only fire after consent is given, so when Complianz scans your site it cannot detect those scripts and omits the corresponding category.

The good news is that category visibility in Complianz is not solely determined by the site scan. Each category has its own condition for appearing on the banner, and you can meet that condition directly through your plugin settings.

What controls whether each category appears

Marketing appears on the banner if at least one of the following is true:

  • At least one service is selected under Wizard > Consent > Services
  • The TCF (Transparency and Consent Framework) is enabled

Statistics appears on the banner if any analytics or statistics configuration is defined under Wizard > Consent > Statistics.

Preferences appears on the banner if at least one of the following is true:

  • "Consent per Service" is enabled under Wizard > Consent > Services
  • Google Consent Mode is enabled under Wizard > Consent > Statistics
  • The WP Consent API plugin is installed and active

How to make the Marketing category appear

If your GTM setup is configured correctly, the Marketing category should appear automatically once the conditions above are met — typically by having at least one service selected under Wizard > Consent > Services.

If the category is still missing, you can force it to appear by registering your GTM marketing script directly in Complianz's Script Center and assigning it to the Marketing category. This is a manual override rather than the expected flow, but it is a valid workaround when the banner is not picking up the category automatically.

To do this, follow the steps under "Add a Third-Party Script" in the Complianz documentation: Integrating plugins - Add a Third-Party Script. When prompted to choose a category, select Marketing.

About scan failures

If your site scan is failing or not detecting scripts correctly, this is a known issue currently being investigated. Scan results do not need to be complete for your banner to work correctly — as described above, category visibility can be configured independently of what the scan finds.

Still need help?

If the Marketing category still does not appear after following the steps above, please share the following so we can investigate further:

  • A screenshot of your current settings under Wizard > Consent > Services
  • Whether the TCF framework is enabled in your setup
  • Your Complianz plugin version
